Whisper Garden — image 1

Whisper Garden grew from pressed flowers. I collected specimens over an entire spring—columbine, foxglove, sweet pea—pressed them, then used them as direct templates on the glass. Each botanical form was painted petal by petal in reverse, starting from the innermost vein. The pigments themselves are partly derived from the same plant species depicted, closing a circle between subject and material.

Painted on Schott B270 glass using a mix of traditional Reusche enamels and hand-ground botanical pigments extracted from the depicted plant species. Seven layers kiln-fired. The botanical pigments produce soft, matte tones that contrast with the gloss of the enamel layers. Framed in limed ash with a linen-wrapped backing board.

The botanical pigments are most luminous under soft, diffused light. Avoid harsh spotlighting. A warm-white LED backlight panel produces a gentle glow reminiscent of a garden window.

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. The botanical pigments are light-stable but will shift subtly over decades, much like a watercolor—this is considered part of the piece’s living character.
