Obsidian Pulse explores the boundary between darkness and light. In ambient room light the piece appears almost entirely black—a void. But as direct or back-lighting is introduced, rhythmic bands of teal and gold emerge from the depths like bioluminescent creatures rising from a volcanic trench. The piece rewards slow observation; new details continue to surface over minutes of looking.
Painted on float glass with a base of lamp-black enamel through which metallic pigments (copper, brass, and interference mica) are layered in controlled gradients. Oil glazes between enamel layers create the depth effect. Eleven layers total, each kiln-fired. Housed in a black walnut shadow-box frame with a matte-black interior to maximize the emergence effect.
This piece is designed for dramatic lighting control. In a dim room with no backlight, it reads as a dark, meditative void. A dimmable warm-white LED backlight panel reveals the full palette. Consider installing a dimmer switch to control the revelation.
Dry-dust with a microfiber cloth. The matte-black interior of the shadow-box can attract dust—use a soft brush. Avoid touching the glass surface with bare hands, as oils can leave marks on the dark ground.
