I spent a year in Fez studying traditional zellij tilework, and returned to the studio obsessed with the idea that the mathematics of tile patterns could be painted in reverse on a single pane of glass. These works are the result — individual stars, eight-point rosettes, and a ceiling rose commissioned for a private library. The geometry is exact to within half a millimeter; the paint layers give it breath.
Each piece begins with a full-size pencil cartoon traced on Mylar. The cartoon is mirrored and placed beneath the glass as a guide, and the reverse painting proceeds in up to twelve layers. Gilded ornament uses 23k gold leaf applied with oil sizing. Frames are custom-built per piece.
Designed for ambient interior light. The ceiling rose is engineered for a concealed warm-white LED ring that illuminates it from the edge inward. Wall-hung panels benefit from a single low-angle picture light.
Dust annually with a microfiber cloth. The kiln-fired enamels and sealed gold leaf are stable for the life of the building.
Available as individual works or full commissions. Quoted after a conversation about your space and intent.
Each piece ships with a signed Certificate of Authenticity, a numbered holographic seal, and a digital provenance record including a scan of the original pencil cartoon.
